After a weekend of challenging hockey at the 2010 Canlan Ice North Shore Spring Sizzler Tournament, the 2002 South Delta Kodiaks came home victorious. There were 10 teams in the division, from Maple Ridge to Seattle.
The tournament started with a Friday morning win (2-1) against the ’02 Surrey Jr. Eagles. The scoring started by the Eagles late in the second period. The Kodiaks answered back early in the 3rd and scored another with a few minutes remaining to clinch the win.
Game #2 was at 8 Rinks in Burnaby against the Westside Flyers. The Kodiaks scored 3 times and the Flyers answered with a late goal in the dying seconds of the 1st period. The Kodiaks scored twice in the 2nd and once in the 3rd period. Winning the game (6-1).
Game #3, the Kodiaks were back on the North Shore Saturday morning to play the ’02 BC Lightning. This was a strong team, which the Kodiaks have played a few times during regular season. The scoring began when the Lightning hit the back of the net a few minutes into the 1st. The Kodiaks answered back 15 seconds later to tie it up. The Kodiaks battled hard throughout the 2nd period with another point to show. The Lightning was able to score again in the 3rd, but not before the Kodiaks. The Lightning was unable to regain the lead and the Kodiaks secured the (4-2) win with another goal late in the game.
After looking at the point standings before the 4th game, the Kodiaks knew what they had to do to place high for the finals. They had to win their next game by a large margin. Game #4 they played the North Shore Warriors in Burnaby Saturday afternoon. Having never played them before, the Kodiaks didn’t know what to expect. The Kodiaks hit the ice and were pumped to play. They were on the scoreboard within two minutes and continued to play hard. They ended the 1st period with eight goals to none. The Kodiaks continued the trend throughout the remainder of the game. The score sheet read 16 goals with no room left for more. As a courtesy, the final score was recorded as 10-0 for the Kodiaks. This score pushed the Kodiaks into 2nd place overall. They were to play against the ’02 Jr. Flames in the 2002 Elite AAA finals on Sunday.
These teams have faced each other in during the regular season, which has sparked a healthy rivalry between the teams. In the regular season, both teams have no losses and one tie. The (8-8) tie between these two teams was a little controversial. The final goal scored by the Kodiaks crossed the line a fraction of a second before the final buzzer sounded. After a brief discussion the linesmen signaled to the net. The goal stands. A little while after the game, some video recorded by a parent showed the goal was legitimate.
The Final game of the Tournament started with a scoreless 1st period. After a quick intermission the teams hit the ice and the Kodiaks dominated the 2nd period and racked up 3 points on the board. It was a fast paced game with a lot of battling in the neutral zone. The Flames with an early goal took the 3rd period. With less than 3 minutes remaining, one of the Flames hit the boards hard forcing an injury time out. He remained on the ice for a number of minutes. The Kodiaks had left the ice and the game was about to be called when thankfully the Flames player was helped off the ice. After a quick regrouping the Flames took the face-off in their zone and within 20 seconds they scored a goal, and another goal less than a minute later to tie the game. This game was forced into a 3 on 3, five minute, sudden victory overtime.
The puck dropped at centre ice and the Flames immediately took the puck to the net. They had a few shots and managed to keep the puck in the Kodiaks zone. One more sharp angled shot and through the crease it went past the net. The puck was picked up by a Kodiak and taken down ice and with a laser of a shot it hit the back of the net. The Kodiaks win!
The 2002 Kodiaks represent South Delta during the regular spring season at the Langley Sportsplex. They play the Flames again on May 15th and it promises to be a challenging game for the players and an entertaining one for the fans.
The Kodiaks send thanks to Kintec FootLabs for their generous support for this tournament.
Keep clawing your way to the top Kodiaks!
GO KODIAKS GO!!!

Coming back from a loss in the second round in the Tiering Tournament, the Kodiaks were fire up to play their first regular season game against the ’02 BC Lightning on Sunday March 28th. After their early morning drive they arrived to the arena to start their ritual. They were all wide-awake despite most of the played at least seven games at the annual Street Hockey Tournament the day before.
Their warm up skate started a little differently with the intentional absence of pucks. After a quick grind on the ice the pucks came out and started flying at the goalie, Nelson Griffiths.
The game puck drops and within the first couple of minutes #19 Max Yingling strikes earning the Kodiaks their first goal. The second goal was recorded not too long after that when Zac Sherwin maneuvered the puck past their goalie.
Twenty seconds into the second period, Matt Willford was in the right spot to poke in a pass from Alec Scouras to gain another goal for the Kodiaks. Mid way through the period Alec was able to capitalize on a power play and score another goal unassisted. The Kodiaks chalked up two additional goals, one from Matt Willford and the other by Max Yingling, who assisted Matt in the previous goal. Alec Scouras was credited with the assist to Max.
Alec wasn’t done yet. He buried another puck in the Lightning net in the middle of the third period. Josh Bermel was injured during the game. The play stopped and he came off the ice. Not sure what happened, he recovered and came back out on the next shift and played like a man possessed.
The Kodiaks battled long and hard for supremacy over the Lightning. Each skater played his position like a professional. The confidence was building in each other when they began to realize that their line mates were where they needed to be in order to play effectively. The passing had the Lighting players scrambling from one end of the ice to the other; defense pass, forward to center, into the corner, back to defense across to the other side then forward, back again, shot, rebound, and again.
Only letting 3 goals past him, Nelson played a stellar game. His trapper’s getting stronger when he uses it, nothing get past him. He’s becoming a dominant force between the pipes and is beginning to control more of the shots using all of his tools. Nelson had a front row seat to this clinic put on by his team. He faced a lot of shots and he was chosen as player of the game by the other team. Final score (3-7)
The Kodiaks next game is Saturday, April 3rd against the Surrey Jr. Eagles. The puck drops at 10:45am. Wearing the ‘C’ will be Alec Scouras.
Stay Fuzzy and make sure your fur doesn't stick to the ice.
GO KODIAKS GO!!!
The Kodiaks just completed a three game run at Langley Sportsplex this weekend. Everyone was there and pumped to play.
The first game on Saturday was against the 2002 BC Lightning team.
The Kodiaks had just come from a 5-0 win against the 2003 BC Lightning a few days earlier.
After four unanswered goals from the ’02 Lightning throughout the 1st, 2nd and part way through the 3rd period, Matt Willford put the Kodiaks on the board. That’s when the Kodiaks shut the door on the Lightning and didn’t give them a chance to get any more shots off. Rhys Porteous got another point on the scoreboard with just under 40 seconds left in the game making the final score 4-2.
Both teams played hard and the proof was when they came off the ice dripping with sweat.
A few hours later and after some refueling, the Kodiaks came back to the rink following a late lunch to face off with the 2002 Jr. Flames.
They filled the arena with renewed energy and enthusiasm. They hit ice looking to extinguish the Jr. Flames. They fought hard and worked hard, they were rewarded with two goals in the 1st period. One by Hayden Tuba assisted by Zac Sherwin and one from Rhys Porteous assisted by Alec Scouras.
Rhys Porteous put another point on the board near the end of the second period, but not before the Flames had scored their first of the game. The Flames managed to squeak another one past the goalie, Nelson Griffiths in the third period, but running out of time, it was too late. The Kodiaks came away victorious.
There were still a few more games to be played in the division and the Kodiaks wouldn’t know if they were playing again until 10:30 the next morning. The top five teams would advance to the playoffs. Everyone was anxious to find out.
Once all the games were played and the scores tallied, it came down to goals scored. By a very slim margin the Kodiaks secured 4th place. The Kodiaks were scheduled to play at 3:pm against the team they just played, the ‘02 Jr. Flames. They edged the Flames out of fourth place.
The Flames were definitely lit when they hit the ice at 3 o’clock. They were fired up and in the 1st period scored the first and their only goal.
Throughout the game the Kodiaks remained steady and strong. The roar from the crowds echoed through the building when Rhys put the Kodiaks on the board. Number 14, Alec Scouras, assisted him. Later in the same period, Ryan Watson sent the puck to Zac Sherwin for the second and final goal of the game. The Kodiaks advance again.
The next game is scheduled for Tuesday March 23rd, at 5:pm. They will be taking on the 2002 BC Bears. A couple of the Bears played for the Kodiaks last season. It will be an interesting and exciting game. Get there early to get a good seat. I imagine they’ll fill up fast.
See you there.
GO KODIAKS GO!!!
Tiering Tournament - Game #1
The much-anticipated first game of the 2010 spring season was played last Tuesday.
The Kodiaks were bursting at the seams with excitement. Although the drive to the arena was only 45 minutes, a few chauffeurs had said it would probably be the longest drives they’ll take. Head Coach Jim arrived to a buzzing dressing room. The players were amped and ready for the pre-game warm up. They ran out the door an hour before game time and they flashed through the arena with a wake of spinning people behind them. After the warm up and stretches, they roared back into the arena just as the fast as they left.
The Kodiaks continued their pre-game ritual in the dressing room. Coach Blair had his go-time music pumping and the players began pulling their gear out. A few jerseys on the hooks were admired as if they were overflowing stockings at Christmas time.
You could see it in their eyes, the anxious anticipation, and the uncertainness of what will unfold. Their confidence was taking over as the music played on. The thumps of the beat like drums in the jungle, thump, thump, boom. With every beat, and with some encouragement, the parents slowly came out of their trance and noticed the kids laughing and joking.
Although there are a few new players in the room this year, the Kodiaks roster was filled with familiar faces and names. They have all either played with or against each other during the winter season. The 2010 roster includes:
#2 Carter McColman
#6 Zac Sherwin
#7 Matthew Willford
#9 Mathew Morison
#11 Ryan Watson
#12 Braedy Euerby
#14 Alec Scouras
#16 Carson Hemenway
#17 Rhys Porteous
#18 Aidan Van Poelgeest
#19 Max Yingling
#20 Hayden Tuba
#22 Ben Kraemer
#27 Josh Bermel
#29 Nelson Griffiths
They were nervous, but they were subtle. As they pulled the dark green jersey over their shoulders, their apprehensions disappeared. They earned that jersey and with their name across their back they proudly stood up a couple quick glances down to make sure the fit was right, their chests puffed out and their heads were held high.
Once the parents left the room, the coaches and players began to focus on the game. The door closed. For 15 minutes it was quiet outside the room. What was going on? What were they talking about? Did they have some master plan? And all of a sudden, it was like a bomb had gone off, a roar from the players, GO KODIAKS GO, quelled the silence!
They marched out of the room and toward the bench. After a quick on-ice warm up, the starting line up took shape at centre ice.
This night they are playing the 2003 BC Lightning. Although they are younger than the Kodiaks, they shouldn’t be underestimated.
The first goal was on the board after right-winger; Matthew Willford (#7) clipped a bouncing puck for a redirect into the net at 11:31 into the first period. Assisted by his wingman and one of the new Kodiaks, Rhys Porteous (#17). The second goal was also scored, unassisted by Matthew Willford at 8:03 in the first period.
The battle for the puck continued during the second period. Neither the BC Lighting nor the Delta Kodiaks were able to get the puck on the net for the 12 minute period.
The teams lined up again after a brief intermission between the periods. When Zac Sherwin (#6) took the face off and after a quick scrum he broke away from the pack pushing the puck up ice. Nine seconds into the period he wired a zinger to the back of the net. It was a little over 30 seconds later when Zac redirected a shot from defenseman Carson Hemenway (#16), making the score 4-0. You could see the fatigue setting into both teams, but they continued to work hard.
There was a late penalty to the BC Lighting (#8) for a body check to Carson Hemenway. From the stands it looked like a hard hit, but Carson skated away with a jammed thumb. After a quick seat on the bench he came back out to finish the game.
The determination and hard work of the Kodiaks earned them one final goal by Alec Scouras (#14) assisted by Carter McColman (#2).
The next day Coach Jim said, “What a great game to start Spring Hockey with!! The coaches and I were very pleased with all the Kodiaks yesterday ... the boys worked hard, made great passes and most important of all seemed to have a lot of fun!”
The Kodiaks will have a practice on Thursday March 18th, 4:30 at Ladner Leisure Centre. They will be back on the ice in Langley on Saturday March 20th for two games. The puck drops for the first game at 10:45am in the Green Rink.
